THE NAME
He wasn’t born Palladio.
Andrea Palladio was born Andrea di Pietro della Gondola in the Veneto in the sixteenth century. The son of a miller, he entered the stone trade while still young.
Palladio came later. His patron, Gian Giorgio Trissino, gave him the name drawn from Pallas Athena, the Greek figure associated with craft. The work came first. The new name followed.
Five centuries later, Palladio’s buildings still stand.
